Twin Cities Local Rules
Team Divisions and Player Ratings
Twin Cities teams may register in one of four divisions: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, or 4.5. To determine where a team belongs, calculate the numerical average of the ratings of the top two men and the top two women. Unless the team chooses to use the match level option (see below), this calculated average must not be higher than the division in which the team registers.
Here are examples of how a team's rating is calculated:
Example 1. This team qualifies for the 3.5 division, even though one of its players has a 4.0 rating, since the average of the top two men and top two women is 3.5.
| Highest rated man | 4.0 |
| 2nd highest rated man | 3.5 |
| Highest rated woman | 3.5 |
| 2nd highest rated woman | 3.0 |
| Average rating | 3.5 |
Example 2. In this example, because the numerical average is greater than 3.5, the team must register in the 4.0 division, unless it chooses to use the match level option.
| Highest rated man | 4.0 |
| 2nd highest rated man | 3.5 |
| Highest rated woman | 3.5 |
| 2nd highest rated woman | 3.5 |
| Average rating | 3.625 |
Match level option. This option allows a team to register in a lower division than it qualifies for using the rules above, if the team qualifies for the lower level at every match during the season. This means that for every match, the numerical average of the ratings of the top two men and the top two women who show up to play at that match must not be higher than the division in which the team is registered.
Singles sets. Note that any player on a team that qualifies under these rules may play singles, even if the player is rated higher than the division. In example 1, above, the 4.0 man may play in the men's singles set, even though the team and division are rated 3.5.
Small Divisions
If fewer than four corporate teams register in a division, non-corporate teams may be allowed to register for that division, with the consent of the corporate team captains in the division. Non-corporate teams are not eligible, however, to advance to the WTT Finals in Indian Wells.
Team Size
The minimum team size is four players (two men and two women), but teams are usually bigger to cover summer vacation times. There is no maximum limit on the number of players who may register for a team.
Substitutes
Teams may cover absences with players registered as substitutes (when registering, select "Substitute" for "I am signing up as"), but no substitute may play for a team more than two times during the season. Registered substitutes are not counted when determining whether a team's roster has 50% or more employees.
Player Registration Deadline
Players (including substitutes) may register at any time during the season, but must register before the scores are recorded for any match in which they play (the deadline for recording scores is noon on the Friday following a match).
